Kenmore dryer repair: testing a dryer part with a multimeter

How we find the fault

Gas and electric dryer repair: we test the part before we call it bad

A dryer that will not heat or will not start has a break somewhere in the circuit. We use a multimeter to check the thermal fuse, the heating element, the thermostats and the wiring one by one, so we fix the real problem and not a guess.

  • Vent, power and breaker are checked first, because they cause many no-heat calls.
  • Each part is tested with the power off and the dryer unplugged.
  • You hear what failed and what it costs before any part is fitted.

Repair or replace

Repair or replace a dryer? How to decide

We tell you what we see so you can decide. These are the questions that matter.

Repair usually makes sense when

  • The dryer is otherwise in good shape.
  • The fault is one part, like a belt, fuse or switch.
  • The repair costs much less than a new dryer.
  • A warranty, plan or recall covers it. Check how.

Replacement may make sense when

  • The dryer is old and other parts are worn.
  • The part is a motor or control board and the dryer is not new.
  • The dryer overheats again and again.
  • The repair would cost close to a new dryer.

Before you call

Four dryer checks before you call for repair

Want to try the simple fixes first? Safety first: unplug the dryer. Then work through these in order. Most no-heat and no-start calls start here.

  1. 1

Clean the lint trap and vent

Look at the vent hose behind the dryer. A crushed or clogged vent is a common reason for no heat.

  2. 2

    Check the breaker

Electric dryers use a double breaker. One half can trip while the other stays on.

  3. 3

    Check the door

A dryer will not run if the door does not close and latch.

  4. 4

    Check the gas valve

On a gas dryer, make sure it is open. If you smell gas, leave and call the gas company.

Case studies

Dryer case studies: what the research shows

These are three cases from public safety records. They are not our customer jobs. Each one links to its source.

Fire safety
34%of reported dryer fires: failure to clean

Dryer fires in homes: what the U.S. Fire Administration found

What happened. In its 2008 to 2010 data, the U.S. Fire Administration estimated about 2,900 clothes dryer fires a year in homes. They caused about 5 deaths, 100 injuries and $35 million in property loss each year. The leading cause was failure to clean, at 34 percent.

What it means for you. A clogged lint trap or vent is the most common fault and the easiest to check. So the lint trap and vent come first on every visit.

Recall
21,000LG and Kenmore Elite gas dryers recalled in 2012

Recalled Kenmore Elite gas dryers: the gas valve that would not shut off

What happened. In August 2012 the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled about 21,000 LG and Sears Kenmore Elite gas dryers. The gas valve could fail to shut off, so the dryer kept heating after the cycle ended. There were 141 complaints and three minor burns. The fix was a free gas valve repair.

What it means for you. If you own a Kenmore Elite gas dryer from the 796 model family, check the model number on the label inside the door against the recall notice. Stop using an affected dryer until it is repaired.

Gas and electric
81%of laundry fires started in a laundry room or area

Gas or electric: what the fire numbers say

What happened. An NFPA fact sheet shared by the U.S. Department of Energy counts about 17,700 home fires in 2006 involving clothes dryers or washing machines. Of the fires that spread beyond a small container, 81 percent started in a laundry room or area. Gas dryers carried a slightly higher fire risk than electric ones. Failure to clean was the leading cause at 29 percent.

What it means for you. Both gas and electric dryers need a clear vent. On a gas dryer, treat any gas smell as an emergency: leave the home and call 911 or your gas utility. Gas repairs are for a technician.

How much does dryer repair cost in Kenmore, WA?

It depends on the fault and the part. A blocked vent costs less than a failed motor or control board. Call us, tell us what the dryer does, and we explain the repair and the cost before work starts. See the pricing page.

Do you repair Kenmore brand dryers?

Yes. We repair Kenmore dryers, front load and top load, gas and electric. We are an independent repair service and are not part of Kenmore or Sears.

Kenmore dryer repair near me: do you cover my address in Kenmore, WA?

Yes, we are based at 7915 NE 205th St, Kenmore, WA. Check the service area page or call with your street or ZIP code.

Why is my dryer not heating?

Usually a blocked vent, a tripped breaker, a blown thermal fuse or a failed heating part. Check the vent and the breaker first. Read the not-heating guide.

Why won’t my dryer start?

Check the power, the breaker and the door first. A failed door switch, start switch or thermal fuse can also stop it. See the won’t-start steps.

Why is my dryer so noisy?

A thump often means a worn belt or rollers. A squeal often means the idler pulley or motor bearing. Do not run a dryer that grinds. Read the noise and belt guide.

Do you repair gas dryers and electric dryers?

Yes. An electric dryer uses a double breaker and a heating element. A gas dryer uses an igniter and gas valve coils. Gas work is for a technician.

Is it safe to keep using a dryer that gets too hot?

No. Stop, unplug it and call us. Lint and a blocked vent trap heat. Read the warning signs and fire safety guide.

Is a Kenmore dryer repair ever free?

Only when a warranty, service plan or recall covers it. Check your paperwork first. See how to check.

How do I find my Kenmore dryer model number?

Open the door and look on the door frame. It can also be on the back or side of the cabinet. See where to look.

Do you offer same-day dryer repair in Kenmore?

It depends on the day’s bookings and on whether the part is on hand. Call us and we give you the earliest visit we can, and tell you if a part has to be ordered.

Is this the Kenmore customer service phone number?

No. Kenmore is a brand name. We are an independent repair service in Kenmore, WA. For the brand’s own customer service, use the contact details in your dryer manual.

Do you repair Kenmore Elite, HE, Oasis and older Sears dryers?

Yes. We repair Kenmore Elite HE2 to HE5, Oasis, steam and older Sears-era dryers, gas and electric. Models starting with 110 were built by Whirlpool. We match the part to your model number. See the Kenmore models page.

What does the F01 error code mean on a Kenmore dryer?

On a Kenmore Elite HE3 dryer, F01 means the main control board has failed. Turn the dryer off at the breaker for 10 minutes, then restart it. If F01 comes back, call us. See the error codes page.

Is there a fee just to look at my dryer?

Ask us when you call. We tell you any call-out or diagnostic fee, and the likely repair price, before we start.

What warranty comes with a repair?

Ask for the warranty terms on parts and labor when you get your quote, and keep them with your receipt.

What should I do before the technician arrives?

Clear a path to the dryer, empty the drum and clean the lint filter. Have the model number ready. If you smell gas, leave the home and call your gas utility before anything else.
